Abstract

This reclaims the novelist M.E. Braddon from the claims that her popular brand of 1860s fiction was intended to promote the feminist cause. Rather, by examining archive and textual evidence, Braddon emerges as a complex conservative figure who was deeply suspicious of the militant feminism displayed by the suffragettes and the New Woman.
