Abstract

The essay is a continuation of my AHRC-funded work on Sydney Box that was published by Manchester UP in 2006. Here the focus is on the reasons why films do not get produced (lack of funds, censorship, changes in personnel, clash of personalities etc) and the argument is that this can often reveal more about the workings of the film industry and the problems that the producer encounters at particular historical moments than her or his finished films. The collection as a whole breaks new ground, the first of its kind to focus on this issue.
