The paper provides a conventional survey of the themes and topics that inform the literature, as well as exploring – from a lesbian feminist perspective - what the literature reveals about the social/political history of lesbian parenting. Central themes include child custody and the politics of parenting as a lesbian: whether it constitutes a radical rebellion against patriarchy or a retrograde collusion with compulsory motherhood. The paper concludes by exploring how lesbian feminist writing on parenting has prioritised politics.
