Abstract

An article about the 1958 Hindi-language adaptation of Johanna Spyri’s children’s classic Heidi which addresses the film’s historical and cultural context (specifically the post-independence rhetoric concerning education and literacy in the Nehru era) and its use of mythological material (specifically the story of Krishna and his erotic consort Radha).
