Abstract
This chapter will briefly set the policy background for children and young people’s participation. It will then discuss and advocate practitioner communication skills which can support and encourage children and young people to participate. The issue of trust will be explored and emphasis placed on the importance of listening skills as a communication tool for developing trust and encouraging participation. Using practical examples it will highlight some of the barriers to empowering children and young people to be involved in communication around decision making and highlight practical methods to facilitate their voices being heard.
