Abstract

It is a little known fact that until the 1920s Paris was surrounded by a wall and entry into the city controlled through gates. That wall demarcated Paris from the rest of France. After its demolition that distinction between Paris 'intra-muros' and Paris 'extra-muros' did not disappear. This paper explains how the Boulevard Périphérique that replaced the wall has only served to reinforce a cultural and ideological differences as apparent today as they were a hundred years ago.
