Abstract

Professor Stephen Hoskins was invited to write the foreword to Type in Europe (La lettre en Europe), published to coincide with the Congrès des Musées Européens de l’Imprimerie in Lyon. The European typographical heritage is extremely rich and varied, whether in the form of objects, documents or specialised skills. Preserved and exhibited by a wide range of museums and private collectors, it is an essential source for future generations of graphic designers and historians. For this reason the greatest care must be given to its conservation and transmission. Type in Europe offers an introduction to this important heritage which continues to play an essential role in the evolution of the forms and uses of graphic communications in the digital age.
