Abstract

An international investigation concerning selection of scaffolding systems for a seven-storey in situ concrete-framed building, by contractors' planning engineers in France, Germany and the UK is presented. Findings indicate that preferred methods differ significantly in each international location. Traditional tube-and-fitting scaffolds dominate high-rise in situ concrete construction, although contractors (depending on their nationality) will also frequently utilize proprietary systems (British firms), or designed solutions (German firms). In France, practice is more disparate. Regardless of nationality, company size has little impact on the scaffolding system selected. Seven predominant scaffold selection factors are identified and ranked for each international group of contractors. Statistically, the rankings show significant concordance amongst the three locations, whilst correlation analysis reveals a degree of association between the selection factors. Ultimately, it is shown that safety, relative cost and speed of construction are the principal characteristics determining choice.
