Based on this a framework for defining a general class of meta-heuristic algorithms is proposed and methods for instantiating them defined. Briefly reviewing results presented elsewhere [proceedings of PPSN2002, proceedings of IEEE CEC 2003 (two papers)] the paper then develops more general adaptive algorithms within the framework. The results show significant benefits compared to a range of conventional and hybrid approaches, both in terms of performance, and of explanatory power, and these are related to certain identifiable characteristics of the classes of problems examined.
