Abstract

The diagnosis and management of gestational diabetes is fraught with controversies. Screening tests employed for the detection of gestational diabetes are not standardised. Many different practices exist in the UK causing confusion for practitioners and perhaps the institution of inappropriate treatment. There are differing opinions with regards to the complications for the mother and baby associated with gestational diabetes. The appropriate management of gestational diabetes is also uncertain as the treatment with diet and insulin therapy is controversial. These issues are explored in this article with the aim of encouraging midwives to take a more critical approach to analysing the routine care offered to pregnant women.
