Additional Information:This article comes out of our study of bursary students in two institutions. It questions the assumption that WP students might present a risk to institutions in terms of the need for support and the risk of failure or non-retention by looking at evidence of retention rates and by conducting interviews with students. This study has contributed to the national debate on students support and has been cited by Sir Martin Harris (Director of OFFA) at a Student Retention and Completion conference run by Neil Stewart Associates. The work is described as �innovative' in the HEFCE Review (Gorard et al. 2006). Baxter was responsible for 40% of this publication.
