This chapter develops the work of an earlier publication: On the Margins: the educational experience of 'problem' pupils, (Staffordshire, Trentham Books) which won a prize in the TES/NASEN Book of the Year. The chapter seeks to establish the perspectives of those who are most directly affected by an education system that does not meet their needs - in this case, young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Whilst the voice of pupils generally has been the focus of substantial work in the UK and elsewhere over recent years, similar opportunities for young people exhibiting challenging behaviour are rare. This publication is one of the few that address that challenge, drawing on data gathered from young people who have experienced education in diverse settings.
