Abstract

This chapter offers a critical realist perspective on the causes and consequences of cold-water resort decline, rejecting the most obvious explanations and, instead, drawing attention to economic restructuring and cultural change as hitherto neglected 'generative mechanisms'. These arguments are supported by a series of case studies from across northern Europe.
