|Additional Information:||The study reported in this paper has national and international significance for the teacher education profession as it seeks to implement the DfES' Languages Strategy and the European Commission's White Paper on Education and Training. Whilst research comparing education systems and teachers in England and France existed, no specific research had previously been conducted on primary MFL student teachers and their experiences of immersion in another education culture and language. The aim was to explore the dilemmas which contributed to the students' professional knowledge and formation. The work was received positively by the Director of Education and Training Group at the British Council who gave the paper wide circulation. The paper was also sent to key people in the Teacher Training Agency and the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research in order to maximise its impact. Whitehead co-ordinated overall and was responsible for 40%.|
