|Additional Information:||This paper results from commissioned research for the Primary Educators Network for Advancing Citizenship. It is based on empirical work with PGCE students at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol and presents an analysis of some of the challenges which student teachers face in tackling sensitive and controversial issues with children. The work is further developed in 2 later papers, namely Teaching Citizenship through learning about people's lives in the past' (in Teaching Citizenship: Proceedings of the Children's Identity and Citizenship in Europe Thematic Network, 2005) and Exploring the potential for history and citizenship education with primary children at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in Bristol', International Journal of Historical Learning, Teaching and Research, 6, 1.|
