| Additional Information: | This article develops pioneering work on student bursaries by comparing the experience of bursary students at two modern universities. It confirms the results of international studies that have noted that bursaries encourage retention in undergraduate �commuter' student groups. This study was one of the first of its kind in England and provides evidence to underpin the development of institutional bursary schemes under Access Agreements. The study attracted attention in the national press at the time of its publication, was cited by Sir Martin Harris in several keynote speeches, is cited in the HEFCE Review of widening participation research (HEFCE 2006) and has resulted in invitations to run workshops and present the findings to those involved in designing bursary schemes within HE institutions. Hatt is responsible for 40% of this publication. |
