Abstract
Commissioned chapter in one-volume survey of the history of English. This is the first work ever to pull together the history of all major types of namegiving in English. It has an introductory section covering linguistic and philosophical aspects of the theory of names (partly based on the author's own work), followed by extended histories and linguistic descriptions of personal names and naming practices, surnaming and place-naming, principally in England itself, from Anglo-Saxon times to the present day. Much of it, especially the place-names section, draws on the author's research, and the synthesis is also the author's own.
