Creators:Stevens, C.
Abstract/Description:Short film. Duration 5 minutes 34 seconds. Digibeta format. Stevens' films capture small worlds that communicate complex social and familial issues. Clutch tells the story of a girl and her pony, and addresses themes of adolescence and the transition to adulthood. One of the challenges and unusual aspects of this film was to tell a story that was visually cinematic, yet communicated emotion without use of dialogue, and had a minimal and selective use of sound. Clutch was one of the first hundred short film proposals to be selected by UK Film Council during their launch of the Digital Short Scheme in 2002. When completed it was one of 12 films to be selected onto the UK Film Councils DVD - New Cinema Fund Short Films - which was globally distributed to promote their new wave of short films. Clutch was selected by the British Council for International film festival distribution, and selected for Best European Film Festival, 2003; Bath Literature Festival, 2003 where it accompanied the Iranian feature film Ten directed by Abbas Kiarostami. As part of UK Film Council initiative Clutch was one of two films selected as part of a pilot scheme looking at new types of venues to screen short films. As a result it was screened in 500 hairdressing salons across the UK during 2003. This scheme received national press coverage:The Times, Guardian, Independent (27 October 2003). The publicity still for Clutch was used on the front cover of PACT (Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television) magazine issue 126, November 2002: 'Creative Horizons: what future for regional Indies?' As cover story, the report featured new and interesting films coming out of the regions and addressed issues on sustainability for independent companies working outside London.
