Additional Information:Single authored chapter in anthology of texts on history and future of 'curatorship'. Edited by artist, writer and curator Paul O'Neill, published by De Appel, Amsterdam in co-operation with Open Editions (London). This chapter explores a progressive notion of place within current international curatorial discourse and practice. Doherty's arguments have been realised in practice through Thinking of the Outside: New art and the city of Bristol, which took the form of six major new commissions by Phil Collins, Susan Hiller, Nathan Coley, Silke Otto-Knapp, Joao Penalva and Kathleen Herbert, and was accompanied by the book Thinking of the Outside, with commissioned essays and introductory essay authored by Doherty. The dispersed exhibition was reviewed by BBC Culture Show and Art and Architecture Journal. Phil Collins and Nathan Coley have subsequently been nominated for the Turner Prize in 2006 and 2007 respectively. As a result of the exhibition, Doherty was invited to act as nominator for Becks Futures at ICA 2006 and awarded three commissions by RSA/Gulbenkian in Arts and Ecology, She has been invited to present the findings of the research project in Barcelona, University of Oxford, Frankfurt University, and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne As a result of the exhibition, Doherty was invited to act as nominator for Becks Futures at ICA 2006 and awarded three commissions by RSA/Gulbenkian in Arts and Ecology.
