Abstract:Three video installations. This project originated through a series of residencies and research involving invited visits to zoos, natural history museums and their storehouses, including the Natural History Museum, London; Prague Zoo; and the National Museum, Prague. Through observing preservation methods, making extensive tours of the storage departments, and interviewing employees and curators of natural history Hayes created a series of video pieces and installations that explore notions of temporality and transience. The installations investigated the connection between the living and the dead, real and artificial, the inevitability of change, and the human compulsion for preservation and control. Further exhibitions that resulted from this programme of enquiry include: 'Rien A Declarer' La Faiencerie space, NovArt Bordeaux, France, 2004, Artsway Open 06, Artsway Gallery, Sway, UK, 'Roads and Pastimes' New York, USA.
