Abstract

As part of Jerram's continuing work with sleep psychologists and scientists he held two Dream Concerts to collect vital dream data for the collaborative research programme.

Two events were held from midnight on 28th April 2004 whereby 120 guests took part in a mass experimental concert at the Think Tank science centre in Birmingham. Conceived by the artist, the composition was written by composer Dan Jones; sleep psychologists Dr Chris Alford and Dr Jennie Parker from UWE devised the structure of the sound based score. The composition was performed to the sleeping audience in surround sound.

The project was driven by three research questions: Can an audience be taken to new perceptual locations on the edge of sleep to release their creativity and imaginations? Through the incorporation of sound stimuli during REM, can we steer each imagination to effectively sculpt within the audience's dream space? As it has been found that 65% of dreams are anxiety based, can we change that percentage for the better?

Following data analysis and evaluation, the results of this mass sleep experiment led to the team being awarded a one-year research fellowship at UWE.

Receiving extensive coverage in national newspapers, the project was sponsored by Think Tank, IKEA, NESTA, and Fierce Festival and can be viewed at www.lukejerram.com
