Abstract

This essay was commissioned by Charles Acland following an abstract submitted in response to his call for papers. It comprises a development of previous work on media as preservation technologies, presented in conference papers in 2000 (The Social Context of Death, Dying and Disposal, London 2000) and Inventions of Death at Warwick 2001, and on taxidermy.
