AbstractCompletion of this monograph was supported by an AHRC Research Leave Award, in 2004-5. Chapters 1 and 6 were first published before this reporting period. Chapter 5 is an extended version of a chapter in a previous book (this version comprises 18,000 words: the earlier version was approx 10,000 words, of which approx 5,000 appear in this version) including further material on the history of the concept of homosexuality as it pertains to T. E. Lawrence, an extended consideration of the concept of restraint as it relates to The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and the reshaping of this notion in reports and publications on homosexuality in 1950s Britain, which allows a reframing of the original material and a new argument. Chapter 4 contains material which has been recontextualised in this book to develop further the argument that in this period psychopathological writings provided a significant line of inquiry into 'cultural experience'.
